Christmas Page Templates

One Two Three Four Five

First a little bit of background.

What I have for you is a VERY special plugin.  It’s something that WordPress should have at its very core, but doesn’t.  Trust me, you’re going to have one of those “aha moments” really soon. ;-)

Here’s the problem with WordPress.

For all that WordPress is wonderful and (relatively) easy to use, there’s no simple way of adding page templates to WordPress that interact with the WP core properly.

Think about how pages in WP work now.

You activate a theme, and you find there’s only one page template. Two if you’re lucky.

And even though I’ve been changing that with the Multiple Streams Themes (MST) and adding a variety of page templates to give you more control over the look and feel of your blog – it’s not an ideal way to do it.

Think about it.

You get a cool theme and set up great looking pages on your blog, and then decide to change or update your theme, and suddenly all your pages default back to the one standard page template supplied with the new theme.

All that coolness lost in an instant.  Until now…  ;-)

Last year I had one of my plugin developers and one of my designers start working together to come up with both an end-user PLUGIN and a developer/designer methodology for creating “sticky” page templates.

So when you change themes, your custom designed pages remain UNCHANGED.

And here it is, that moment I promised you earlier…

The very first set of custom page templates were released late last year – almost too late in the year to catch the Christmas buying rush, but I know some managed.

These five Christmas themed WP page templates I have for you are absolutely GORGEOUS.  Yeah I know that’s me saying that, but it’s true and you can check them out for yourself.

Included in this package are the plugin with the pages integrated AND also in plain old HTML format.  I’d like to point out that normally you’d pay a lot more than what I’m going to be asking for these five templates in HTML format, AND you’re ALSO getting them ready to plug right into WordPress and start using straight away.

I’m starting this sale on Sunday 18th September at 6.00pm GMT – yes I know this is quite unusual for me to run a sale on a Sunday, but I ran out of time this week as I’ve been spending a lot of it with new hires explaining their tasks.

The sale is rising price and starts at just $10.00 for the first 50 buyers.  It will then rise to $12.50 for the next 25 and so on until 100 sales have been made when the sale will close.

If you’re quick, you can get them at just $10 for the lot and give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the Christmas rush.  (It’ll be here before you know it.)

    Frank that’s a great plugin.
Have you considered Halloween and Mothers Day etc.
    Look forward to sale.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Dylan,

Yes that’s a good idea. I get distracted sometimes by the day to day stuff, and it’s only when something hits you in the face like seeing the card shop with all the Christmas stuff in it that it sets off a trigger. I had to put the development of this plugin on hold due to not having the right people to develop it for me, but now that I have a new dev and it’s in my focus again, I’ll get it done. I already have some existing general purpose templates, then it will be Halloween next, then more Christmas templates, Valentines day and Mothers and Fathers days.

      Have I missed anything? ;-)

  2. Ely Shemer says:

    Hi Frank,

A long time ago you promised to release this plugin for free (in any case – free to those that purchased the page templates before, or people who are members of PLAhh) and to convert all the old page templates to work with the plugin.

    How is that going?

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Ely,

Yes, the plugin will be free when I release it, but the designs (templates) will be charged for.

About 3-4 months ago (?), I sent you and another person the plugin with all the current templates for you to have a play with. It must have ended up in your spam box as I didn’t hear back from you.

It doesn’t matter anyway as I’m not happy with the way it works when you want to create your own templates – it’s too still too complicated. I want template creation using existing HTML templates to be SIMPLE and at the moment you need both design (CSS) and PHP skills to do it and you can only really do it from a PSD. That’s no good.

I want to be able to take any HTML template from my library, add some standard code in header and footer, place some tags and save. It HAS to be that simple. At the moment I can’t do it myself so that part of it is a non-starter.

Now I have a new dev on board who is also a designer, I’ve asked him if he wants to be the resident expert on the plugin template format and he says a definite YES! So things should start to move on that front once I’ve got him to do the MST007 conversion that we’re all waiting for.

      Watch this space.

  3. Julia West says:

The plugin looks great! However, I must be missing something. Just WHERE am I supposed to go to purchase it? (Where is the “scratching her head” smiley? ;) )

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Julia,

The sale starts this evening /afternoon at 6.00pm GMT (1.00pm EST).

I think the smiley you’re looking for is this one – well it’s the closest I could find. :-?

You add it by typing ; – ? (Remove the spaces.)

  4. Lars says:

    Hi Frank,

Wow, sounds great. Will be back tomorrow to pick up your plugin.

    Take care / Lars

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Lars,

Thanks for that, see you then, and you too. :-)

  5. Chuck says:

I have to agree it does look awesome and I’m going to make use of this over and over this Christmas!
    Look forward to tomorrow!

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Chuck,

Yeah, you don’t have to use these templates for just sales page, you can put any content you like into them.

The only thing that’s missing from them at the moment is the ability to add a discussion box so that people can leave comments. We’ll add that to the plugin as soon as we start work on it again.

  6. Very cool, Frank! I hope you will make templates for other holidays, too. In the U.S., for example, Halloween is rapidly overtaking Christmas in dollars spent.
    Plus, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day—-lots of possibilities!

Thanks for coming up with such great tools.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Kathleen,

      Aha! Great minds think alike.

The Halloween spend is an interesting one, I hadn’t heard that. Interesting in that what’s really a very old religious occasion displacing a relatively new one.

And yes, Mother’s day, Father’s day etc, and maybe also Independence day? And here in the UK we also have another one on November 5th called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night depending on your preference to celebrate the Houses of Parliament NOT being blown up in the Gunpowder Plot. Lots of fireworks, baked potatoes, roast chestnuts, hot dogs, that kind of thing, but it’s not a holiday. Coming so close to Halloween it’s still a very big spend time though and I think psychologically it gets people in the “spending mood” for Christmas.

Ah, another one, but we don’t have it here – Thanksgiving – but I guess you could use some of the Christmas designs for that? Maybe? I don’t enough about that part of your culture. ;-)

  7. Ronaldo says:

    Hi Frank!

    This plugin is absolutely fantastic!!
For sure I will purchase it as soon as you release it.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Ron,

It is really good, but I’m not totally happy with it yet so it will get some more work now I have a new dev. :-)

  8. What a cool and clever plugin and the way it stitches is awesome
I do like the x-mas theme ones but I am more into the long term side
of the plugin and promoting different products from one location on a blog
with different sale pages and changing the theme does not affect it all.
    Top Plugin

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Albert,

Yeah using a plugin to do this replaces all those themes that keep being pushed at us doesn’t it? It seems that for a long time designers and marketers have pushed themes at us, but it’s about time that we’re able to use a plugin to give us control over the presentation of your blogs. :-)

  9. James Dunn says:

    Hey Frank.

Are these the SAME themes or is it something different from what we bought at the end of the season last year? If it’s something different, I’m in. Just don’t want to purchase something a second time.

    James Dunn
    Athens, GA USA

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi James,

They’re the same ones so you won’t need these, but my intention now I have new guy is to change how the plugin works (make it better/easier) and release plenty of new templates including some Halloween and Christmas ones.

  10. Jack says:

Very nice plug-in Frank. It will work nicely for the big money spend coming up the
    next couple months.

Are you planning to have a library of templates built into the plug-in? For instance,
Christmas, Halloween, plain generic minisite, squeeze page, video optin, membership,
Kind of a “ad a template” into an ever-growing collection in the plug-in.
I believe that would sell very well. No matter what time of year, or a launch of a new
product, a person would just pick a theme to match the campaign and do a few edits.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Jack,

Yes. We’ve built a system of adding new templates into the plugin, so the plugin itself will eventually be distributed for free with one or two sales and squeeze page templates as a “starter”. Then we’ll sell other designs so you can pick and choose what suits you.

But before that I want the method of converting existing HTML templates made simpler so anyone with some basic HTML skills can do it. By basic, I mean me. ;-)

  11. G’day Frank,

Got home Friday so busy playing catch up. (Hint Reminder)

Quick question on this one Page Templates is this any different to the one that I and others have already the templates are the same I see are the same?

Will go and get on expect to see & hear more from me now I am home and on a road to recovery.
Playing catch up is a pain in the proverbial.

    Rob P.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Rob,

I hope you’re managing okay, that’s some major surgery you had and you have my best wishes for a full recovery.

The templates in this pack are the same as the ones you already have, but there’s a new version of the plugin running them. Just go back to your download page – yes, I’ll sort all those out for you tomorrow ;-) – and grab the new version.

  12. Hello Frank,

nice plugin again from you like all the time ;-),
but i have a question about this plugin, because how about the updates, because when we have still the page tamplate plugin, become we for this also the updates?

    best regards

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Olaf,

Just go back to your personal download page and grab the latest version of these templates and you’ll get the new version of the plugin running them. ;-)

  13. G’day Frank,

In your time to get me caught up.
I can wait a few more days won’t make that much difference.

If this is any help I still have a page set up using one of the templates mildly modified (your fav and mine to) Feel free to use it as an example.

It had over half a million hits in 3 weeks that page last Christmas.

    Rob P.

  14. Pol vanRhee says:

Not a holiday there, but how about Independence day (could be similar to the Guy Fawkes templates, with fireworks, etc)? A birthday template? As for Thanksgiving, think: Turkeys, colored corn cobs, too much food on a plate (or a cornucopia with vegetables pouring out – corn is big), football (the kind where you use your hands), Pilgrims and Indians (not the real Indians from India, but “Native Americans”).

Cinco De Mayo might be another one, although only celebrated, really, in the US (not even Mexico) but lots of spending for that day. Actually come to think of it how about a string of Templates based around different country cultures. In that country could be used for all sorts of events and special occasions and out side of the country could even be used as travel special sales pages, etc.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Pol,

      Some really good suggestions there…

My intention with this plugin has been that it should be simple enough for anyone with some basic HTML skills (me) should be able to take an existing HTML template and convert it to plugin format. At the moment it’s too difficult to do that, you need PHP, CSS and knowledge of the inner working of WordPress.

I need it to be simple so that it’s not just me who releases templates that work with it. I welcome the time when lots of designers all over the world are releasing new templates for it for us all to use. Then we’ll see lots of country specific templates appearing. :-)

  15. Lanita Ford says:

How much longer before the buy button will be in place for us to order? Anxiously awaiting this one!

  16. Lars says:

    Thanks Frank,
Just bought it and are exited to look over it.
I now have a small collection growing with all your plugin’s ;-)

    Take care / Lars

  17. Lanita Ford says:

    Hi Frank!
Just got mine! I was going to email you asking for the link to this product or find out if you would be putting it back on sale and “waaa lah!” You email was in my inbox for this product. Great minds think alike. I’m so excited to have these!

Just out of curiosity, are you going to be coming out with some new ones, too?

    Thanks again,

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Lanita,

Absolutely! I’m thrilled to have a new coder/designer on board who understands WordPress really well but who loves to design even more. He’s going to convert a PSD to a theme for me first, and then I’ll have him working on almost nothing but this for a few weeks so that there are plenty of designs available. We’ll start with Halloween and I also have some regular sales page designs that will need some work on once we have a new version of the plugin.

You’ll get lots of choice. :-)

  18. Lanita Ford says:

Do I understand from an above post that you have some for Halloween? As in, to use for THIS Halloween? Inquiring minds want to know! =)

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Lanita,

Yes, Halloween is a priority for me now following all the requests I’ve had. I’ve just checked the calendar and I think we can probably get some done by the second week in October.

  19. Hi Frank,

After purchasing many themes I came to the same conclusion. Really hope to see this plugin completed as soon as possible.

    All the best,

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Diego,

Yep me too. From the idea nearly 18 months ago or more, to first release late last year, and now up to today it’s been a long hard slog not made any better by losing some good staff and not being able to replace them.

I’m quite optimistic now that we can have a big pile of sales and squeeze templates (40-50) available by the new year.

  20. Thank You Frank
Got mine and now I await the delights of testing it
and maybe you should consider getting your team to set up
some template packs and we can buy those to match are requirements.

I bet many of us that have bought it would at the drop of a hat !
heads up frank great work as usual

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Albert,

Thank you. Here’s the thing. I *do* have quite a few template packs that I’ve released with earlier versions of this plugin available, but I’ve held them back as I’ve never been totally happy with the way the plugin works. Now I have someone to work on them I feel much more confident about getting this all moving again.

  21. Ronaldo says:

    Hi Frank!

The updates are going to be free? If you insert more different templates in the plugin are going to be free??

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Ronaldo,

      Sorry no. :-(

The plugin will be free, but we’ll charge for any new template designs we create. I want to get the plugin to a state where most people can convert existing HTML sales page templates into the required plughin format, and at the moment it’s not that easy. I can’t do it so I think most people will have trouble doing it too.

      We’ll get there.

  22. Julia says:

Wow, I can’t believe that I got in at the lowest price for a change! :) I have a couple of questions:

1 – Are you planning on offering developer rights to the plugin?
2 – Do we pay for updates/addons to the plugin?
3 – Do we have a multi-site license (for use on sites that we own)?

Looks great, can’t wait to start using it. And I’m looking forward to other holidays and occasions being added to the plugin.

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Julia,

Cool, I’m glad you got it before the price went up. :-)

#1 – When we have a version of the plugin that I’m happy with, we’ll release it for free. BUT the template designs will be charged for. I want to get the plugin to the state where it’s easier to create templates for so that we can all do it.

#2 – Updates to the plugin or designs you’ve purchased will always be free. New designs/templates will be charged for.

#3 – Yes. All of my plugins and themes come with a multi-site licence unless I say otherwise. I really should put that somewhere in big letters shouldn’t I? A “Licence” page on this site would probably be a good idea.

As soon as we can we’ll get some more themed templates out there.

  23. Julia says:

When you work on the next Christmas templates, will you please include at least one nice Christ-centered template? Same thing if you later make Easter templates, too. Keep the secular templates, but please remember those of us who include Christ in our Christmas celebrations, and in our business practices. Thanks! :)

  24. Julia says:

On second thought, it would be nice if you came out with a Christmas template pack that was COMPLETELY Christ-centered. That way, those who want only secular Christmas templates will not be offended. I would use the templates myself, AND market them to quite a few Christian churches in my area as an affiliate . . . :)

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Julia,

Okay, I’ve noted your request, and I can very much understand where you’re coming from. No promises yet other than I’ll bear that in mind as we create new template packs.

  25. Frank M. says:

    Hi Frank,
first of all, many thanks for that great pugin. Guess it will work really fine…
Still a little question. Do you use the gettext- functioality to make the plugin translatable into any language?
I always like to translate my WP-Themes and plugins if possible with poedit to use them in English and in other localised WP-enviroments aswell. I found a lang folder inside the package, but it is just a *.php and I was looking for *.po and *.mo -files.
Would be nice to hear your meaning.
Anyhow, its a nice and useful plugin…

    • Frank Haywood says:

      Hi Frank,

Great name BTW. I’ve always asked my staff not to use the method as I’ve found it causes lots of confusion when trying to translate plugins. It’s a typical developer answer to what I’ve always considered a relatively simple problem. So I ask that they create a simple text file instead.

Just use that file and change the text inside.

  26. Frank M. says:

ok, Frank, eventually its not important which method you re using to make it translatable…
Means, I have just to replace the corresponding terms. Do I need to rename the en.php? Guess not, just renaming to save it.
